PM Believer: Off the Rack with Alterations

I am a believer in the power of project management.

As a professional project manager for nearly twenty years, I have witnessed project success drive business results. I have also proven that project management can change lives and help achieve personal transformation. Now I am sharing some practical tips and techniques that you can use to help achieve your own personal goals, live your best life and become a PM Believer.

Off the Rack with Alterations

I have a friend who recently got engaged and is getting married in November. She recently found the perfect wedding dress for her big day. Right after she “said yes to the dress,” she met with someone to get alterations.

When you buy a suit, dress or other important garments off the rack, does it fit perfectly right away? Probably not. Every person is different and clothing fits differently. So that means you need alterations. You need to get it tailored to perfectly fit your unique body.

Similarly, an off-the-rack project management methodology doesn’t fit your project properly. Project management tools are not one-size-fits-all.

Every project is different and the tools and methodology are just a starting point that needs to be altered to perfectly fit your specific need. This process is also called tailoring.

Today’s PM Believer post marks the twenty-second tool or concept I have shared that can be applied to your personal goal project. And there are plenty more posts of additional tools yet to come. That is a lot of tools to help you accomplish your goals.

Would I recommend using all of these tools for every project? Absolutely not.

Like advice, a project management methodology is a toolbox full of tools that might be relevant or helpful for your project, but are far from necessary for every project. The trick is to pick and choose the right tool (or tools) for you for this job. Remember, as I discussed in Winning with Laziness (link), the trick is to use the least amount of process to reach your goal. Not too much process, not too little process, just the Goldilocks-like perfect fit.

How will you tailor your process to be the perfect fit for your project?

Are you ready to be a PM Believer?

When you buy an off-the-rack suit or dress, you are likely never going to get the perfect fit for your specific body shape. You need tailoring to achieve the perfect fit. Read this week’s PM Believer to see how this concept can help you achieve your goals.
