Amuse-Bouche Before we jump into today's post, I offer you this "dad joke" as a light "amuse-bouche" to entertain your mind before we get serious. Like any other amuse-bouche, you may hate it, but it is worth every penny you paid for it, right? I have a phobia of over-engineered apartment buildings. I guess you could call it a complex complex complex.
The Most Valuable Project Management Tool For Personal Goal Success
While you and I believe in the power of project management, some corporate leaders are a bit more skeptical. They think that project management is overly complex and bureaucratic and that our processes slow the delivery of projects. This is why the average lifespan of a project management office is less than five years.
Constantly living in the crosshairs of budget cuts and downsizing means that our project management processes are continually second-guessed. In their zeal to drive efficiency, many corporate project management teams skip the most valuable step in the project management process. Then they are surprised that their projects fail.
Fortunately, you don’t have to make this same mistake in your personal projects.
If your personal goal project is going to be successful, it needs to start on the right foot. Your project needs to begin with a commitment to achieving a SMART goal with a strong why.
The need to start strong is why your project charter is the most valuable project management tool for personal goal success.
A project charter formally recognizes a project’s existence and is authorized to continue. In your personal goal project, your charter is used to recognize, for yourself, that your project exists and to state its goals. It marks a decision point in your life and your commitment to accomplishing your goal.
A strong project charter for personal goals answers the following questions:
- What goal do you intend to achieve (the SMARTer, the better)?
- Why is this goal important to you?
- What “quick wins” or “early start” actions can you take to immediately get moving with your project?
- What steps can you proactively take to keep your charter top-of-mind, so you don’t immediately abandon your goal?
When you skip the charter step and don’t put these details on paper, your goal will likely be vague, and your commitment will be squishy at best.
On the other hand, simply writing your goal down makes it more real. It also becomes 42% more likely that you will achieve it! So, put as much detail as you know about your goal on paper. You don’t even have to show this paper to anybody but yourself.
A written charter is the best first step to achieving your project’s goal.
