Amuse Bouche
My amuse bouche for you today is a light “dad joke” to entertain your mind before we get down to business. Like any other amuse bouche, you may hate it, but it is worth every penny that you paid for it, right?
Accordion to research, 9 out of 10 people don’t notice when you replace words with a musical instrument.
Goal Success by Choice
Do you have dreams that you are trying to make come true? Do you have a goal that you are trying to crush? Success doesn’t happen by chance. You don’t have to get lucky or win the lottery to live the life of your dreams.
You just have to choose to be successful. If you make the right daily choices, adopt good habits and behaviors, and approach life with the right mindset, you can make your dreams come true.
Goal Success by Choice helps you make the choices that will move you closer to your goals and keep you from holding yourself back.
I hope this post helps you get a little closer to crushing your goals.
Choices for a Successful New Year
We are our choices.
Jean-Paul Sartre
There are only about five weeks left in this year; 2022 is coming up fast!
With the rapidly approaching new year, you are probably starting to think about your goals for next year. Note that I said goals and not “New Years Resolutions.” As you probably know, and as I talked about in Happy New Year!?, I think the traditional New Years Resolutions don’t work. It is unlikely that January first will result in a new year and new you unless you set goals instead of resolutions.
While setting goals is a great start, that alone will not yield success. Succeeding with your goals in the new year requires choosing to be successful. Choosing effective habits is an excellent first step.
For the remainder of this year, I will be sharing five simple choices you can make that will help you succeed with your goals in 2022.
By setting goals and making good choices, you can join my fight against goals dying of loneliness.
Know Your Numbers
I want to start strong, so I will share one of the most important choices for a happy new year first. Other than actually setting goals, this choice has been the one that has contributed most to my success.
Know Your Numbers! Once you have set a goal or just identified something you intend to improve, track the data associated with that thing. There are numbers you can track for any goal you have, especially SMART goals. Here are some examples:
- Losing weight: At its core, weight loss is about the calories you consume versus burn – or, calories in, calories out. Do you know what you ate yesterday and how many calories it contained? Do you know how many calories you burnt yesterday? Simply starting to track your daily consumption and exercise data is a significant step towards achieving your weight loss goals.
- Running speed/distance: Do you want to run a marathon or simply improve your running speed and distance next year? How many miles did you run last week, and what was your average pace? How did that compare with the week or month before? By tracking your running data, you can see whether or not you are making progress and take steps to make the necessary adjustments.
- Become a millionaire: Do you want to become financially wealthy? What is your net worth today? Do you know how much money you earned, invested and spent last month? If you don’t know if you are spending more or less than you are making, you will likely never become wealthy. Keeping track of your financial numbers will remove the guesswork and help you make the choices that will help you get rich.
Those examples are just the tip of the iceberg; you can track many more things to help you achieve your goals.
Knowing your numbers is important because what gets measured gets managed. Numbers don’t lie and will reliably tell you if you are on track or not. Tracking numbers makes your journey more scientific and removes the guesswork. This is much more reliable than simply hoping for success.
Pro tip: when choosing which numbers to track, make sure you aren’t just focused on results and outcomes. Track numbers that measure things you can immediately control each day, your behaviors. For example, tracking your diet and exercise numbers is more important than the number on scale if your goal is to lose weight.
Do you want to accomplish something big? Set a SMART goal and track your numbers every day.
So What?
The new year will be here very soon, which likely means that you are working on setting new goals. While setting goals is essential, it is just the first step towards your eventual success. For the remainder of 2021, I will be sharing five easy choices you can make to help you succeed with your goals for 2022. I am starting with the choice that has been most impactful to my success.
