Need Coaching? 3 Surprisingly Simple Questions To Ask Yourself.

In Ask Coach Tony, you can put my Operation Melt coaching to the test by asking me questions about how to achieve your goals.

Because a question asked by one is often a question had by many, I am regularly sharing these answers via the Operation Melt blog.

Amuse-Bouche

Before we jump into today's post, I offer you this "dad joke" as a light "amuse-bouche" to entertain your mind before we get serious. Like any other amuse-bouche, you may hate it, but it is worth every penny you paid for it, right?

My cousin was going on and on about how an onion is the only food that can make you cry without eating it. So I hit him in the face with a coconut.

Need Coaching? 3 Surprisingly Simple Questions To Ask Yourself.

Coach Tony: How do I know if coaching would benefit me?

Everybody needs a coach!

I know that may not be the most helpful answer, so let me go a little deeper.

This is a tremendously important question! One main reason people don’t engage, or even initiate a conversation with, a coach is that they aren’t sure what a coach can do to help them. Instead of seeking help building the life of their dreams, they suffer in silence and go it alone while hoping for the best.

It doesn’t have to be this way! It is ok to seek a partner to help you lighten the load.

Here are three questions you can ask yourself to figure out whether coaching might work for you.

Are you happy? What does your wheel say?

Let’s start with the most pressing question… are you happy with your life?

Are you sure? Maybe it’s time to unpack the dimensions of happiness.

An essential tool I use as a coach is the Wheel of Life. This exercise asks the participant to rate their level of satisfaction and happiness with various areas of their life. Then, the results are presented visually on a wheel. The wheel clearly depicts the areas where your happiness is flourishing and struggling.

What does your wheel say?

Download my free worksheet (in the Resources section of OperationMelt.com) and complete your own Wheel of Life. Are there any areas of your life where your happiness is suffering?

  • Are you happy with your job or miserable at work?
  • How are your romantic relationships? Is it time for an upgrade?
  • Are you having enough fun in life, or is fun always on the back burner?
  • Are you struggling with your health, fitness, weight, nutrition or body image?
  • Is money a valuable tool or a source of frustration in your life?
  • How about your living conditions? Are you in your dream home or trying to escape your parent’s basement?
  • Do you feel like you are consistently growing and advancing in your life, or are you stuck?

If there are any low-rated areas on your Wheel of Life, coaching can help you identify the root causes and build a plan to boost your satisfaction with those areas.

Do you have goals and making progress with crushing them?

The next question to ask yourself to decide if coaching may be right for you involves your goals.

Do you have goals?

Researchers have concluded that pursuing goals you consider attainable results in higher cognitive and affective (mental and emotional) well-being. And don’t worry about failing to achieve your goal; these higher levels of happiness happen even when you don’t actually achieve your goal. An attainable goal doesn’t have to be successful to result in a happier life.

Despite the happiness impact of goals, approximately 80% of people in the United States have one. Are you one of them? Do you have a goal dying inside you, just begging for a little attention?

If you haven’t set goals or don’t believe your goals are attainable, a coach can help you figure out what you really want from your life and set SMART goals to make it happen.

But don’t stop there…

Setting goals is only the first step in your journey. After setting a goal, you need to take steps to achieve them. This includes:

  • creating a plan that works for you
  • measuring progress every day
  • expecting and planning ahead for problems
  • building a team so you don’t go it alone
  • Enjoying the journey

Have you taken these steps? Are you progressing toward your goal?

If you have set goals but don’t feel like you are moving toward the finish line fast enough, a coach can help you create a plan and build the momentum you need.

As your coach, I will work with you to create a project charter to identify all your life goals, prioritize them and convert them into achievable SMART goals. Building a SMART goal includes the all-important why and your crystal-clear vision for the future. Then we would create a roadmap to get you from today to your destination and execute two-week sprints to make it happen.

Do you feel like you are in control of your life, time, energy and emotions, or are they controlling you?

The final question to ask yourself to determine whether coaching is right for you is a doozie!

Do you feel like you are in control of your life?

We live in a complicated world where many people feel at the mercy of their busy schedules, jobs and other commitments. They don’t think they have control of their time, energy or even their emotions. They are being controlled by their lives rather than controlling their lives.

Do you feel like you have a clear purpose and plan for your life, or are you just meandering through life and doing your best to keep up?

Working with a coach will help you uncover your life purpose and build a strategy to feel like you are in control of your life. Doesn’t that sound like a great way to live?

If you aren’t sure whether coaching is right for you, ponder these three questions. I am not suggesting a cursory “yeah, sure” answer; I recommend taking time for quiet reflection, contemplation and maybe some journaling. This is a time when you’ll want to be honest with yourself.

If you decide that coaching might be right for you, I would love to chat about it (yes, that could even be via email, DM or text messages). I am a certified Master Life Coach and a Health coach, and I can help you use project management to build a life of happiness and satisfaction one goal at a time. Let’s talk!
