Unexpected Impact of Goals: How To Get Faster & Happier

In Ask Coach Tony, you can put my Operation Melt coaching to the test by asking me questions about how to achieve your goals.

Because a question asked by one is often a question had by many, I am regularly sharing these answers via the Operation Melt blog.

Are you ready for a dad joke?

I offer you this "dad joke" as a light "amuse-bouche" to entertain your mind before we get serious. My dad joke may be groan-worthy, but it's worth every penny you paid for it, right?

I learned a lot of troubling things this week. Did you know that Soulja Boy isn't really a soldier and Dr. Dre isn't a real doctor?! I'm beginning to think that Adele isn't even a computer!

Unexpected Impact of Goals: How To Get Faster & Happier

Today’s post will be a brief story about the power of telling our brains we have a goal.

As you may know, since starting my weight loss in 2017, I have done a ton of walking. I get at least ten thousand steps per day, six days per week, and often way more. I track many of these walks using my wearable fitness tracker. I am excessively aware of my walking distance, steps, pace, heart rate and other performance data. I have a lot of data, know it well, and use it to identify many trends.

During most walks, my pace averages nineteen to twenty minutes per mile. This has been my average for quite some time, and with so much data, it is based on a significantly large sample size to make it quite reliable.

While my average walking pace has remained consistent, this is part of the story. This week, I noticed another trend, there are times when I consistently deviate from my average pace. This deviation tells a story about the power of goals.

My traditional twenty-minute pace is my average when walking for exercise and recreation. When that is not the purpose of my walk, my pace changes.

I discovered that when my walking has an intended destination (or goal), my pace gets faster.

A couple of Fridays ago, I went for three walks. Two of my walks were for recreation and exercise, and my pace fell within my nineteen-to-twenty-minute average — no surprises there.

My third walk was different. I had a destination. I walked about two miles to the Cap City Half Marathon expo to pick up my race packet. During this walk, I averaged seventeen to eighteen minutes per mile, much faster than my “normal” pace.

I wasn’t intentionally walking faster.

I didn’t feel like I was exerting more energy.

My acceleration was driven by my brain’s knowledge of my goal. My focused energy resulted in higher performance with the same level of exertion. Pretty cool, right?

Goals are powerful — powerful enough to subconsciously result in higher physical performance. Given this power, why waste a single day without defining and pursuing our goals? They can literally make the difference between simply existing and living the life of your dreams.

Are there goals inside you that you aren’t pursuing? Do you have defined (and written) SMART goals and a plan to achieve them? Are you on track? As a coach, my job is to help you identify all those goals buried inside you and convert them into achievable plans. Does this sound beneficial to you? I would be happy to be your partner. Let’s work together to make it happen.

I believe in you; let me help YOU believe in you!
