Why I Wrote Project Manage Your Life

PMYL Blog Takeover!

As you may already know, I’m launching TWO new books on May 1:

  • Project Manage Your Life: a step-by-step blueprint for taking control of your life using proven project management principles.
  • Project Manage Your Life Workbook: a companion workbook packed with guided exercises, planning tools, and tracking pages to help you apply the PMYL system in real time.

Together, these two books (along with my coaching) represent the Project Manage Your Life (PMYL) system that I’ve used to help clients (and myself!) achieve big, bold goals. Now I’m packaging it up and making it available to YOU.

As we rapidly approach launch, I’m dedicating my weekly blog to topics related to Project Manage Your Life.

Ready for a dad joke?

Consider this a lighthearted amuse-bouche for your brain before we get serious. Sure, it might be groan-worthy—but hey, at least you’re getting your money’s worth, right? 😆

Ever notice when geese fly in a V formation, one side is always longer than the other?
Ever wonder why?
This is because there are more geese on that side.

Why I Wrote Project Manage Your Life (PMYL)

Goal-setting can feel vague, overwhelming—even triggering. I’ve had more than one person tell me that just hearing the phrase “SMART goals” makes them want to run for the hills.

Hey, I get it.
I once went ten years without setting a single meaningful personal goal that didn’t involve chasing a job title or a bigger paycheck.

But goal-setting doesn’t have to suck.

There’s a better way:
✅ Clear
✅ Structured
✅ Proven

That’s what Project Manage Your Life delivers.

Today, I’m sharing the backstory behind why I created this system—and why I believe it can change your life too.

The Moment Everything Changed

In early 2017, my life looked a lot like many others. Maybe this sounds familiar:

  • I was always “busy”
  • I was working 60–70 hours a week in a toxic job
  • I was constantly chasing the next promotion, raise, or bonus
  • I had set few—if any—personal goals
  • I felt like life was controlling me, and I was just struggling to keep up
  • And most troubling: I was taking my health for granted

That year, I visited the doctor for the first time in over 15 years and got a sobering reality check:

  • My lifelong obesity had reached a critical point: 325 pounds
  • My fitness level was zero
  • I was over-consuming in every way
  • My stress levels were off the charts
  • I had multiple undiagnosed and unmanaged physical and mental health challenges

The doctor warned me: take action now or face serious consequences.

Many of those consequences were all too familiar… I had just watched my dad die (fade away, really) a few years earlier at age 59. I didn’t want to follow in his footsteps.

I was tired of my weight problem.
I was tired of feeling out of control.
It was time for a change.

A few days later, I made a commitment to myself:
I was going to lose over 100 pounds in under a year.

But there was just one problem:
I didn’t have a damn clue how to do it.

So I turned to the one thing that had never failed me:
Project management.

I set a goal and managed it like a project… complete with plans, tracking, accountability, and structured execution.

And it worked.

📉 Nine months later, I was down 100 pounds.
🏁 Sixteen months later, I crossed the finish line of my first half marathon.

But even more importantly… I crossed the finish line of a transformed life.

What had once been a lifelong embarrassment became an empowering achievement.

Telling My Story And Creating A System

I was convinced that using project management wasn’t just my secret weapon—it was something anyone could use.

Project management is a tool. And like any good tool, it works when you know how to apply it.

That’s when I turned my journey into a mission: No goal should die of loneliness. Every goal deserves a fighting chance.

In 2019, I published my first book: Operation Melt: How I Used Life-Changing Project Management to Lose Over 100 Pounds in Under a Year. It shared the story of how I went from 325 pounds to running a half marathon in 16 months and how I did it by managing my life like a project.

Then I started coaching. I used that same structured, left-brained approach to help clients set and crush their goals. Health, mindset, career pivots, businesses… you name it.

And it worked.

It wasn’t just a one-off success.
It wasn’t a fluke.
It was a system.

The Birth of Project Manage Your Life

With every coaching engagement, I field-tested my process.

  • I refined it.
  • I made it better.
  • I made it repeatable.
  • I made it scalable.
  • I made it easy to follow.

That’s how Project Manage Your Life was born… a six-step, repeatable framework to help anyone achieve any goal.

I wrote the book to share this system with the world.

I wrote it for people who are tired of spinning their wheels and just want a clear, simple plan.

Then I created the Project Manage Your Life Workbook… the exact toolkit I use with clients. It includes the planning tools, tracking pages, and reflection prompts that make the process stick.
It’s your Coach Tony DIY Toolbox.

And the final piece? Coaching.
When you work with me one-on-one, I’ll help you apply the Project Manage Your Life system to your first goal (and let’s be real—you probably won’t stop at one).

What Next?

So there it is—the origin story of Project Manage Your Life:

  1. Born from my own need to change my life
  2. Validated through real coaching clients
  3. Built into a practical, powerful, and proven system for anyone ready to take control

If you’ve ever felt stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure where to start…
This system is for you.

This isn’t just a book.
It’s your blueprint to finally making your goals happen.
