The Naked Truth (Revisited): Why I’m Still Getting Naked on Purpose

When was the last time you spent real time in the buff?

Not changing clothes. Not showering. I mean quality, intentional time in your own skin.

If you’re like most people, you probably try to minimize non-essential nudity in your life. I used to be the same way. But eighteen months into a personal experiment (inspired by a body positivity), I can confidently say: choosing to spend more time naked has changed me for the better.

A while back, I shared a post exploring the unexpected benefits of stripping off your clothes… and it got people talking. My readers were surprised that I was talking about going naked in a goal success blog. I guess that’s just how I roll.

That post hit home for a lot of people. So now, one year and a whole lot of naked mornings later, I’m bringing it back—refreshed, refined, and more convinced than ever of its power. After all, growth means revisiting the things that work, stripping them down (literally in this case), and asking what they still have to teach us.

Let’s talk about the benefits of nudity and how a little less clothing might just bring you a lot more confidence.

Why Talk About Nudity?

This isn’t about shock value. It’s about honesty.

Over the past eighteen months (and especially the past six months) I’ve been exploring nudity as a personal growth tool. I didn’t expect to feel this strongly about it, but here we are. And if I’ve learned anything from Operation Melt, it’s that the most unexpected journeys often have the most powerful impact.

Here’s why I’m revisiting this topic:

  1. Authenticity. If it’s helping me or my clients grow, I’m going to share it. That’s the deal.
  2. Universal nudges. When you keep getting whispers from the universe, you listen… before it throws a brick (see Best of Operation Melt: Whispers, Voices, Screams, Bricks).
  3. It really works. Increased nudity has brought measurable improvements in sleep, health, body confidence, and even goal momentum.

Before continuing, I wanted to give a shout-out to my inspiration for trying this experiment. Sarajane Case, host of the Enneagram & Coffee podcast lit my nudity fuse. In her episode Let’s talk about body image, she introduced the idea of spending more time naked as a body positivity tool. This sparked my interest, I did a lot of research and then I kicked off my personal experiment. Thanks Sarajane!

3 Research-Backed Benefits of Nudity

These aren’t just feel-good theories… there’s legit science backing up why getting naked more often could be one of the simplest ways to boost your well-being.

Benefit #1: Better Sleep

Millions of people suffer from poor sleep, and the consequences are serious… fatigue, stress, weakened immunity, and long-term health risks. Here’s where naked sleep helps:

  • Cools body temp for better quality sleep
  • Increases production of brown fat (linked to metabolism & weight control)
  • May reduce long-term weight gain

Shed the PJs and sleep deeper. That’s a win.

Benefit #2: Better Health

Going nude isn’t just about sleep… it supports broader health:

  • Skin breathes easier without clothing, improving moisture & circulation
  • Naked time outdoors boosts vitamin D absorption (hello, immunity!)
  • Looser clothing … or none at all … can even help with fertility

It won’t magically make you healthier, but it supports other habits that will.

Benefit #3: Boosted Confidence

This one is personal.

Spending more time naked exposed me (pun intended) to something I’d been avoiding for years: myself. Not just my body, but the thoughts I had about it. And those thoughts weren’t all kind.

But the more time I spent unclothed, the more I normalized my body. The exposure became a kind of mental un-filtering. I stopped critiquing. I started appreciating.

As my friend and former trainer Teresa Miller says:

One of the top reasons folks seek out personal training is to ‘look better naked.’ While changing your body composition (or weight) can definitely lead to that confidence, I think the real shift has to happen mentally.

I would challenge anyone with this mindset to shift how you view yourself (naked) before your weight loss journey begins. Recognize all of the things your body does for you! It’s important to remember that your body image WILL vary day-to-day – and that’s okay!”

Naked time isn’t about chasing a perfect body… it’s about learning to trust the one you’ve got.

My biggest transformation wasn’t physical. It was mental.

An interesting side effect was a continued evolution of my mindset about exercise… less about “fixing” problem areas, more about honoring and pushing my body.

Your 3-Step Naked Journey

You don’t have to dive in all at once. Here’s a beginner-friendly way to explore the benefits.

Step 1: Start Small

Try spending more time nude during low-stress activities:

  • Morning coffee or journaling
  • Stretching, yoga, or strength training at home
  • Sleeping (this one’s easy!)
  • Working from home off-camera (at least, I recommend off-camera only, but your call!)

This isn’t about exhibitionism. It’s about comfort and curiosity. Let your body breathe a little.

Step 2: Work With a Pro

Consider a body-positive photo shoot. My friend Whitney Brewer is a photographer who helps clients feel seen, safe, and stunning. Even if no one ever sees the photos but you, the experience can be transformational.

Whitney (read her story in Putting It All Out There: Whitney’s Unique Mission-Driven Life) says:

As a body positive photographer, I have witnessed how this magical, empowering & safe experience over and over again leaves clients feeling liberated, confident, sexy, free, lighter and genuinely happier….

This is where professional support meets radical self-acceptance and self-love.

Yes, it may be scary, AND we can’t grow in comfort zones. Do it anyway!

Step 3: Communal Nudity (Yes, Really)

This isn’t for everyone. But research shows that safe, consensual communal nudity can:

  • Improve body image through normalization
  • Reduce shame
  • Build confidence through connection

Naturist communities, nude beaches, and clothing-optional yoga are all options. Just research first. Respect the space and its rules.

Final Thoughts

This started as a fun experiment. It became a confidence builder. Now, it’s one of my favorite coaching tools.

Nudity taught me presence. It taught me body acceptance. It reminded me that growth doesn’t always require more clothes, more credentials, or more doing.

Sometimes, it just requires you to stand there… fully yourself… and say, “This is me.”

If you’d like a partner to help you boost your confidence, gain clarity on your goals, or step more fully into self-acceptance, I’d love to be your coach. I can help you manage your life like a project and achieve your goals one step at a time.
