Ready for a dad joke?

Consider this a lighthearted amuse-bouche for your brain before we get serious. Sure, it might be groan-worthy—but hey, at least you’re getting your money’s worth, right? ????

Why can't you hear a pterodactyl use the bathroom?
The p is silent.

PMYL Pro Tip: Stand Up for Your Goals

PMYL Pro Tips are quick, actionable strategies to help you apply the Project Manage Your Life system in everyday life. These aren’t just summaries of the book, they’re bonus tips and real-world tactics I use with coaching clients to help build momentum, stay accountable, and keep goals on track.

Think of them as your behind-the-scenes coaching boost … straight from the trenches of real goal-setting.

Measure Progress Every Day

One of the key principles in the PMYL system is to measure your progress daily.

Why? Because goals don’t get crushed in one giant leap. They get chipped away at with consistent, small actions… day after day.

And one of the best tools to help you do that? The stand-up meeting.

The Stand-Up Meeting

If you’ve worked on Agile projects, you’ve probably been part of a daily stand-up meeting. These meetings are quick, focused, and designed to keep everyone aligned and moving forward.

In most stand-ups, each person answers three questions:

  1. What did I accomplish yesterday?
  2. What are my plans for today?
  3. What’s blocking my progress?

These meetings are done standing up to keep things short and sweet (hence the name), and they typically last no more than 15 minutes.

But here’s the thing: you don’t need a team or a corporate project to make this work.
You can use this exact structure to build momentum on your own goals.

Your Personal Stand-Up Meeting

Your personal goals deserve the same level of focus as your work projects. So why not bring the same tool to your personal playbook?

Here’s how to create a personal stand-up practice that fuels your progress:

🔁 Do this daily (preferably in the morning):

  • Set aside 10–15 minutes—just you and your goals.
  • Open your favorite journal or note-taking app.
  • Answer these three questions:
    • What did I do yesterday to move my goal forward?
    • What will I do today to make progress?
    • What’s standing in my way, and how can I handle it?

That’s it. No fluff, no pressure… just a clear, honest check-in with yourself that builds momentum over time.

This quick habit creates:
✅ Accountability – You’ll think twice before skipping a day if you know you’ll be reviewing your effort tomorrow.
✅ Motivation – Seeing your daily wins builds momentum.
✅ Clarity – You’ll quickly identify what’s working and what’s not.

Plus, it feels damn good to start your day feeling in control and aligned with your goals.

Why Morning Matters

You can technically do your check-in anytime, but first thing in the morning is best.

  • Your willpower is strongest
  • Your distractions are lowest
  • Your brain hasn’t been hijacked by email, meetings, or social media.

Starting the day with intention sets the tone for everything that follows.

Instead of reacting all day, you’re leading.
