Progress before perfection sounds great.
But what does it actually look like in real life?

Before we dive in, here's a groan-worthy dad joke as a little palate cleanser. I promise it will be worth every penny you paid for it. 😂

What Progress Before Perfection Looks Like in Real Life
Hey Goal Crusher.
In this episode, we’re continuing our focus on progress before perfection.
If you haven’t been following along, here’s the quick version.
Most people’s dreams die from the same poison before they even get started. Overwhelm. They stare at all the steps ahead of them, freeze up, and never take step one. They never even get past the starting line.
The simple antidote for this poison is one of my core coaching philosophies: progress before perfection.
Stop waiting for “one day.” Make today DAY ONE, and figure out step 50 when you get there.
This episode is for you if you’re thinking, “Ok, I get it. Progress before perfection makes total sense. But what does that actually look like on a random Tuesday?”
I’m going to walk you through three tools I use with my clients to get them off the starting line. You can start using them today, even if you’re not a client.
What Does Your DAY ONE Look Like?
Tool number one: commit to a SMART goal.
I know goals get a bad rap. Maybe you’ve had goals forced on you at work. Maybe a goal that fizzled out left a bad taste in your mouth. But goals are magic. Goals give our actions purpose, our dreams structure, and our lives direction.
As I explain in Project Manage Your Life, “goals hold a hidden power. One that can help you take control of your future, let go of your past, and live a more fulfilling life.”
Committing to a goal is how you decide today is DAY ONE.
With my clients, I use my Project Manage Your Life Workbook to guide them through my ABC Goal Setting process. This helps them discover what they really want, prioritize their ideas and craft an effective SMART goal. Then they commit to their SMART goal using a goal project charter.
Ready to try this at home? Here’s how.
Step one is to ask yourself, “What do I really want to achieve?” Everything starts there.
Then take that goal and make it a SMART goal by asking yourself these questions:
- Specific: What do I want to accomplish?
- Measurable: How will I measure success?
- Attainable: Is this goal realistic within my current situation?
- Relevant: Why is this goal important to me?
- Time-bound: When will I achieve it?
Write it down and put it where you can’t ignore it. Bathroom mirror. Sticky note on your laptop. Phone lock screen.
Want some help? My Project Manage Your Life Starter Kit walks you through it step by step. It also gets you started on the next tool, which I’ll get to in a minute.
Turn Your Dream into Reality… Two Weeks at a Time
Tool number two: Sprinting to Success.
Once my clients have committed to a goal, it’s time to act. But that doesn’t mean staring at step 50 and getting overwhelmed all over again. That’s not how we make big things happen.
When I help my clients chase their dreams, we do it two weeks at a time. In Project Manage Your Life, I call this Sprinting to Success. Clients work their plan in focused two-week sprints, doing the work and tracking their progress along the way. Each sprint ends with a retrospective, where we look back together, celebrate the wins, and plan the next sprint.
That’s right, just two weeks. No need to look further into the future. Nothing overwhelming. A short commitment to bite-sized steps.
Want to plan your own two-week sprint? Ask yourself the same question I ask my clients every two weeks.
Look two weeks into the future, what one to three accomplishments will you celebrate?
This is your ta-da list. A few meaningful steps toward your goal. Small enough to be achievable, but big enough to create progress. It’s called a ta-da list because you will celebrate them at the end of this sprint. Every win, no matter how small, deserves a celebration!
At the end of each sprint, complete a short retrospective exercise. This is where you pause and review your sprint and ask yourself four questions:
- Wins: What went well? What accomplishments are worth celebrating?
- Concerns & Obstacles: What got in your way, and what will you do differently next time?
- Tangible Results: What measurable progress did you make toward your goal?
- Next Sprint Plan: What wins will you celebrate at the end of your next sprint?
The retrospective is where having someone in your corner makes the biggest difference. It’s what coaching does best!
Repeat this two-week cycle until your dream is a reality.
Make It Visual, Make It Stick
Tool number three: a visual tracking board. It’s inspired by something I’ve used in the corporate world.
If you’ve ever seen a kanban board at work, this will look familiar.
A few weeks ago, my client Anna shared how we built a visual board to track her sprints. In her words, “Physically seeing myself accomplish things made it easier to not get overwhelmed and made me feel good about my progress.”
Grab some wall space and sticky notes and create four columns: Now, Next, Later, and Done.
- Now is your current ta-da list.
- Next is what’s lined up for your next sprint, so you can plan ahead while you work.
- Later is your parking lot for ideas and needs that pop into your head.
- Done is where every win goes to be celebrated.
Want to start smaller? Two columns, Now and Done, works great too.
A quick note about the Later column. When an idea pops into your head, you don’t have to decide when to do it. You don’t have to carry it around all day. And you won’t forget it. Just write it on a sticky note, slap it up there and come back to it when the time is right.
And it doesn’t have to be pretty. Crooked sticky notes still count. That’s progress before perfection.
Get ready… there’s nothing quite like the feeling of slapping a sticky note into Done.
Overwhelm is a poison that kills dreams before they even get started, feeding on the big picture until you’re stuck. Three simple tools help you shrink it down to something you can actually do this week. That’s progress before perfection, and it’s how “one day” finally becomes DAY ONE.
You’re here for a reason. Let’s take the next step.
Goals die when you chase them alone. So don’t.
